A buoyant Lancaster and Morecambe 2nd team face a driven but youthful Southport 2nd team in what turned out to be a very exciting match. Lancaster and Morecambe 2nd team’s sturdy formation and conviction to push forward proved far too strong for the away team. Firm and accurate hits from defence successfully transferred play to the midfielders who worked the ball with the inners to push into the opposition’s 25.
Relentless waves of probing hits from the midfield created countless opportunities for the forwards to seal the deal and secure the points for the league leaders. Straight strikes, deflections and pure skill…all were converted into goals. The backboard shook with the force of the strikes, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven times. Seven goals and five different scorers (N. Hughes, G. Charlesworth, A. Cartmell, K. Lee and B. Clelland).
This performance demonstrated not only Lancaster and Morecambe’s strength but also the depth and versatility of the squad.
The stead-fast defence and mid-field was simply too well organised for Southport’s attack. Southport however showed their determination and skill when breaking through Lancaster and Morecambe’s formation, driving the ball with no hesitation and striking in the D. This gave Southport a well-deserved, but in the terms of the match, consolation goal. Lancaster and Morecambe immediately closed ranks and worked to get the ball back up the pitch.
A special mention goes to Lancaster and Morecambe’s man of the match J. Inman who showed her skill as an inner by both attacking in Southport’s D when setting up goals and by defending in Lancaster and Morecambe’s half, stopping the opposition before reaching Lancaster and Morecambe’s D.
7:1. Another win. First in the league. Game on.
